The Greek root of philanthropy may be literally translated as “loving people.” The English word can refer to general goodwill to one’s fellow people, as well as to the active effort to promote the welfare of people, but in modern use it is most often used to refer specifically to the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for others. A person who practices philanthropy is called a philanthropist.
Philanthropy dates back to Greek society. For instance, Plato instructed his nephew in his will to use the proceeds of the family farm to fund the academy that he founded in 347B.C. The money helped students and faculty keep the academy running.
Philanthropy refers to charitable acts or other good works like volunteering your time or efforts that help others or contribute to the well-being of society overall. For some people, philanthropy means donations of money, often large sums, to support or create university buildings, research centres, or fund scholarships. For others, acts of philanthropy mean an annual donation to a local theatre, homeless shelter, food pantry, or school.
There are many benefits to being a philanthropist. Experts conclude that charitable giving can improve one’s emotional and even physical well-being, and philanthropists have the satisfaction of knowing they have contributed to the greater good. In fact, some studies show that philanthropists have less depression, higher self-esteem, lower blood pressure, and may even live longer than those who don’t give.
At Laurium Private Wealth we are proud to have teamed up with two charities/philanthropic institutions that have been set up to help other people. These are:
It’s Philanthropy
- At Its Philanthropy we want to create real change. By empowering children in disadvantaged communities to change their lives through education. Planting seeds of change everywhere we go.
- We seek to empower impoverished children, by funding educational projects in the world’s poorest communities.
- We see a fairer and more equal world, where education is a fundamental birthright, and all children have the power to transform their lives.
- To create exponential change through the power of education. To be transparent in all our endeavours and celebrate our wins with our supporters. To maximise our effect where needed most by being project focused, one community at a time.
